Ms. Míguez-Corujo has over 13 years of experience litigating a wide range of legal matters, including contract and insurance coverage disputes, foreclosure and eviction proceedings, cases centered on real estate, surety, and construction law, complaints concerning health insurance and third-party administrators, employment claims, and torts lawsuits. She is also well-versed in the litigation of class action suits and injunction proceedings. As such, Ms. Míguez-Corujo has represented a variety of clients before state courts and administrative forums, as well as arbitration and mediation proceedings. These clients include investors, startups, small businesses, insurance carriers, insureds, engineers, and developers, among many others.
Throughout her career, Ms. Míguez-Corujo has successfully settled multimillion-dollar disputes and obtained numerous favorable judgments. In one such case, she persuaded the Appellate Court to reverse the Insurance Commissioner’s Office’s determination to ban her client, a third-party administrator of health insurance plans, from doing business within the insurance industry for 5 years due to alleged violations to Puerto Rico’s Insurance Code. See OCS v. Option Health Care Network, Inc., KLRA201200834 (TA 2012).
Likewise, she was part of the legal team that obtained the conversion of an insurance carrier’s liquidation process, which was commenced by the Insurance Commissioner’s Office, into a rehabilitation process. They achieved this victory on behalf of their client after 3 days of hearings, which included the presentation of over a dozen witnesses. See OCS v. Constellation Health, KAC20160282 (TPI 2016).
Similarly, after a 5-day trial, Ms. Míguez-Corujo won a judgment in favor of her general contractor client, whereby the Court of First Instance dismissed a subcontractor’s breach of contract claim seeking approximately $415,000.00 in damages. See Sun Blinds Fabrics & Awnings v. Hambleton Construction Group, KAC 20161035 (TPI 2016).
Furthermore, in a case before the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, Ms. Míguez-Corujo attained a judgment on behalf of her client, the creditor of a performance and payment bond, upon successfully arguing that if a creditor proves that a surety incurred in bad faith in the handling of a claim, that creditor has the right to claim resulting damages, even if they exceed the bond limit. See 800 Ponce de León Group v. AIG, 205 D.P.R.163 (2020).
Ms. Míguez-Corujo also has ample experience as a notary public. She is well-versed in the drafting and authorization of public instruments for the disposition of, exchange, lease, and development of real estate, as well as prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, wills, and constitutive documents for mortgages, other liens, and trusts. Furthermore, Ms. Míguez-Corujo is also proficient in the cancellation of mortgages, the preparation of documents for donations, the partition and adjudication of estates and the legalization of documents executed outside of Puerto Rico.
Additionally, Ms. Míguez-Corujo is knowledgeable in the judicial processes for settling or probating estates, exequatur proceedings, the transfer of property to heirs, and petitions for the declaration of heirship, as well as other related matters.
Ms. Míguez-Corujo also advises clients on contract negotiations, compliance and regulatory matters involving private and public contracts, and the establishment of businesses, which includes the drafting of articles of incorporation, bylaws, and operation agreements, as well as due diligence.
Moreover, Ms. Míguez-Corujo is experienced in the negotiation and modification of credit facilities, the drafting of financing agreements, promissory notes and other guarantees, the drafting and negotiation of lease agreements and real estate purchase agreements, and closings.
Ms. Míguez-Corujo is a Junior Partner at SCVR. She joined the firm in 2021, after working at another law firm since 2008, where she specialized in commercial litigation and contractual disputes, as well as surety, contract, administrative, inheritance, and notary law.
